6.9 It's Over Now

It is over now and I am at such a loss, I hardly know what to do. Friends have been so kind, offering me work and entertaining me. I can't work, I can't write, I can't even think... what I crave is solitude. I've been going to the port every day to watch the ships in the harbor. It calms me somehow to think that there are places in the world where no one knows...

6.8 A Travesty

"Trial of the Century" -- my tail feathers. "The Travesty of the Century" is more like it. Sparrow's smile when the jury announced her acquittal was her arrow into my heart! I couldn't stop my sobs. Justice truly is blind, and sometimes also deaf and dumb.

Chapter 7: To sea

I have to get out of here. Today I bought a boat. The Wet Hen will be outfitted by week's end and then I will be off.

7.3 Adrift

It is nearly dusk in the vast expanse of the South Sea. I struggle to float. My sodden feathers, once my pride, now threaten to be my undoing. With beak and claw I clutch the shred of coconut husk that is the buoy of salvation. It bobbles with each swell of the ocean. Without it, I'll be sunk.
