1.10 The Sky is Falling Incident

I've been walking for hours -- all alone and I'm still nowhere near the King's City... I must rest for a while before I go on.

This morning, out by the old oak tree, a piece of the sky fell and hit me on the head. I knew then that what Chicken Medium said is true and this is the beginning of my destiny. I told Goosey Loosey about the sky and she said we should tell the king at once. She is right, of course, news of such importance should reach the king and as soon as possible. We started right away. As we walked along, Ducky Lucky and Turkey Lurkey decided to come as well. Even Big Red Hen joined us. I was so proud!

After a while, we met up with Mr. Red Fox and we enlisted him in our mission, but then he wanted to stop for a meal before we continued on our journey. I was as polite as I could be, but I had to refuse. When everyone else accepted his invitation, I was shocked -- time is of the essence! The king must know about the sky as soon as possible. I left that fox and those flighty, uncommitted birds at the crossroads and continued on alone.

I've rested enough for now; I must hop on.

1.11 On the Road

DD,

After last night, I don't want to think about how many more nights I may have to spend out-of-doors before I reach the King's City. I hardly know how to write this, it seems so strange. As evening fell yesterday, I bedded down under a bush by the side of the road. It quickly became very dark -- there was no moon at all. I slept. Then, in the middle of the night, I woke feeling very frightened. It frightens me now just to think about it. I looked up and saw a bright light moving quickly across the sky. It stopped and hovered nearby for a time, and then there was a ring of lights and it came down and hung directly above me. The lights were so bright, it was as bright as day. I must have fallen asleep then because the next thing I remember, it was morning. No cock's crow to waken me. I feel so alone, I'm afraid I'll never get to the King's City. It is such a long way off.

2.2 Such a Heady Time

DD,

Such a heady time. I will be meeting with the King in the throne room at any moment! Earlier today, as the poultry wagon reached the gates of the King's City, I leaned out to get a better look and fell out of the wagon! I barely managed to land safely -- the nearest place was in a passing carriage. The gentleman riding in it was very kind and, after I'd calmed down, I introduced myself. It turns out that he's a courtier, and when he heard my story, he arranged for an immediate audience with the King!

2.3 Disappointing News

Oh my goodness. The king said that the piece of sky I had carried so far to show him was actually an acorn. An acorn! He was very kind and gracious, and I am glad that the sky isn't falling, but it is such a disappointment. He explained it all and he congratulated me for my courage and my pluck. He even invited me to stay the night and join him at the banquet. I am looking forward to seeing my friends from the wagon again at dinner.
