1.5 Advice from Big Red Hen

DD,

Big Red Hen tells me if I don't make up with Banty, I'll never have chicks of my own. Maybe, but I can't think about that. I try to stay on the other side of the yard and just ignore him, but it isn't easy. He mopes about and acts like I'm the one who... Well, I did break up with him, DD. But really, he should pull himself together. I'm not the only chicken in the world, and there's the flock to think of. He's been sulking around the place, he isn't crowing in the morning, no one can get up on time, this is awful. He's lucky there's no other cockerel coming up behind him just now. If he's not careful, he's going to lose his place and the other chickens will start to peck at him. I'm sorry it didn't work out but he's just not the one for me.

1.6 Dustbath and a Snub

DD,

I found the the perfect spot out back for a glorious bath this afternoon. The dust swirled up in a big cloud around me and sifted down between my feathers. Then I sat in the sun and preened and preened. It felt wonderful. Banty came by, but we snubbed each other. I wish we could be just friends again.

1.7 A Mysterious Encounter

DD,

Today I went out back for another bath. Afterwards, I followed a particularly juicy looking grub into the barn through a hole in the wall. There I met the most remarkable hen. She didn't say a word at first, she just looked at me with a piercing, sidelong stare and her head moved about jerkily. Then she started to strut back and forth in front of her nest, pecking the air as she walked. I was just about to walk with her when she suddenly flopped on the ground, clucking and squawking. It gave me such a fright I began squawking too. I didn't know what to do. But then she began to speak in a clam, soothing voice. DD... when she spoke it was as if she had read my heart.

She talked and talked... She said so many things, I can't remember them all. Then she got up and walked slowly to her nest. I didn't want to leave, but she said she was tired now and asked me to go. She told me that we will meet again. I hope so, I don't even know her name. Anyways, I'm coming back tomorrow. Later, when I told Big Red Hen about it, she said, "Stay away from that crazy cluck in the barn. That one can't even live with the rest of us." I think I can see why.

1.8 A Single Feather is all She Found

DD,

Banty was up crowing in the dawn today, so things are getting back to normal again. I guess he's recovered from his broken heart. I went to find that mysterious chicken again this morning, but she was gone! The only thing left was the heap of straw that used to be her nest. I pulled it all apart looking for some trace of her and found this feather. (black and yellow feather enclosed) I hope she didn't lose her head too. Turkey Lurkey told me that her name is Chicken Medium and she is a seer. She can foretell the future. I wonder how she knows?
